Why we are drawn to meat after alcohol

Australian scientists have found out why we so want to taste some fatty kebab after drinking alcoholic beverages. It turned out that alcohol increases the level of a hormone that causes people to crave proteins.

Many of us have noticed how, after drinking a large amount of alcohol, the body suddenly has a craving for meat. And now scientists from the University of Sydney may have figured out why this happens. A study of nearly 4,000 drinkers found that alcohol increases levels of a hormone in the body that triggers a craving for protein.

Most of these people wanted to satisfy their appetite with lean meat, fish and nuts after drinking. But some turned to protein-rich foods like kebabs and chips. Various types of sausage rolls, chips and garlic bread are often served as snacks at parties with a lot of alcohol.

These foods provide the so-called umami taste, similar to protein. However, these snacks are very low in protein. Researchers are now urging all drinkers to eat lean meat, chicken, fish and beans if their appetite increases.
