Why you should not immediately turn on the light in the room: the hotel employee gave advice to tourists

Checking your hotel room for bed bugs should be a top priority when you first arrive at the property. It's easier to do this when the lights are off.

You don't have to turn on the lights right away, she says, when you enter a room. Although it may seem counterintuitive, it's easier to spot bed bugs in a dark environment.

“This is how I check my room before I unpack and move in. The first thing to do is make sure your room is dark. Turn off the lights, close the curtains and use the flashlight on your phone,” says the expert.

She says bed bugs like to hang out in the corners and folds of a hotel bed.

“Even if you can't see insects, be sure to check for a stain like blood stains, because that's not a good sign either,” advises Hailey.

She also advises tourists to check for bedbugs before how to unpack, as bugs can get into luggage, and check curtains and upholstery.

“If you first check in and check your room and find a bug infestation, take a picture, make a note and take it back to registration desk. Most hotels will be able to move guests to a new room and “probably give you a refund,” Haley added.
