Why you should not urinate while taking a shower: the doctor gives two reasons

According to the results of the survey, a lot of people combine showering with urination.

Urinating with simultaneous showering has recently been recommended as an effective means of saving water and helping the planet. The survey showed that 76 percent of respondents combine these two events in their daily lives. However, urologist Alicia Jeffrey-Thomas (Boston Hospital) made a statement that this should not be done.

“This can negatively affect both the state of the bladder and the pelvic floor.”

The doctor gave two reasons explaining why you should not urinate while taking a shower. One of them is that an association between the sounds of water jets and the need to urinate can arise and become fixed in the brain. According to the urologist, studies of the influence of running water show that the desire to urinate in response to the sounds of water is a conditioned and reflex reaction of the body.

If such a reflex occurs, then in combination with pelvic floor dysfunction, it can potentially lead to serious problems with the bladder, loss of control over it, says Alicia Jeffrey-Thomas.

The second reason is important for women. The doctor draws their attention to the fact that urination produced while a woman is standing under the shower is not consistent with the needs of female physiology.

“The anatomy of the female pelvis is not designed to urinate while standing. In men, the bladder is supported by the prostate, which allows them to urinate effectively while standing. In women in this position, the pelvic floor does not relax properly and the bladder does not empty completely”.

The expert noticed that urinating in the shower in women contributes to the development of urinary tract infections and incontinence.
