Woman buys 1950s house and finds hidden surprise

The owner of the house was cleaning out the furniture and belongings of the previous owners herself and was surprised to find about 30 boxes of things in the basement.

A woman from the United States, who asked not to reveal her real name, recently bought a 1950s house and found a hidden “surprise” there. She shared a photo of the found boxes in a post on one of the thematic forums on Reddit.

“We saved up some money for the mortgage. We cleaned out the rest of the furniture and belongings of the previous owners ourselves, and were surprised to find about 30 boxes of old books in the basement,” the author of the story said.

An interesting find

In the published photo you can see some of the publications that were inside the boxes, including Benjamin Franklin’s “Poor Richard’s Almanack”, first published in 1732, and J. R. R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit”, which was published in 1937.

“All the boxes are extremely dusty, and some of them even have mouse droppings on them! I started looking through the editions and was surprised to see a 1966 set of The Lord of the Rings, as well as a 1966 edition of The Hobbit. “In addition, there were newspaper and magazine clippings, laid out in paper bags with labels, which talked about aging and health,” the American adds.

She plans to donate most of the books, published mainly in the 1960s, to a local bookstore, keeping only a few copies for herself as a keepsake.

Viewer reaction

Reddit users began to actively share their thoughts in the comments.

  • “I'm jealous!”;
  • “It's like finding a treasure”;
  • “Wow, this must be a real treasure. Books preserve memories”;
  • “A nice find”;
  • “Imagine how many people held these publications in their hands.”
