Women are more prone to stroke compared to men

Scientists state that women are at a higher risk of stroke compared to men, and there are several reasons for this.

Stroke is one of the most dangerous threats to brain health – it is the second leading cause of death. What is symptomatic, 6 out of 10 deaths from the consequences of a stroke occur among women.

The development of a stroke is the result of a disruption of the blood supply to the brain or a rupture of a blood vessel, leading to the death of neurons.

This condition often begins with a sudden feeling of numbness or weakness on one side of the body, followed by problems with vision, speech and loss of coordination in the body, doctors warn.

Medics also state that women are more prone to stroke compared to men. Partly because women live longer and are more likely to suffer a stroke with age.

The risk of stroke for women increases especially seriously in postmenopause, when the protective effects of estrogen in their body are greatly weakened. Experts note that women are prone to more severe forms of stroke. With age, the susceptibility to stroke for them increases due to non-valvular atrial fibrillation, rheumatic heart disease (in men, stroke is more often a consequence of coronary heart disease, heart failure).

Studies show that stroke in women is worse recognized, and they are delivered more often to the hospital late, although they respond better than men to thrombolytic or endovascular therapy, the only two therapeutic interventions currently available to patients provided they are brought to the hospital promptly enough from the onset of symptoms.

With this in mind, women should increase their awareness of the symptoms and features of a stroke. Quick recognition and response to its occurrence, timely seeking medical help increases the chances of avoiding the most dramatic scenarios of those complications that are possible during a stroke.
