You can suspect the presence of diabetes because of bad breath

Doctor: one of the signs of diabetes is the appearance of a sweet smell from the mouth.
The doctor said in an interview that a change in the smell from the mouth allows you to suspect the presence of diabetes.
“The smell of acetone from the mouth can indicate diabetes,” the doctor stated.
In addition, the doctor noted that when you have diabetes, the “aroma” from the mouth increasingly becomes stinky. The doctor explained that this occurs due to the accumulation of glucose in saliva, which feeds on bacteria that form dental plaque. Since in the case of diabetes, the glucose content in saliva increases, harmful bacteria multiply faster and contribute to more intensive plaque formation.
You can also suspect diabetes by the sweet smell, which sometimes resembles fermented fruit.
“If the blood glucose level is very high, which does not penetrate the cells due to a lack of insulin, diabetic ketoacidosis can develop – an increase in ketone levels. This condition is characterized by the appearance of a fruity odor from the mouth,” the doctor explained.
The doctor clarified that in diabetes, cells lose sensitivity to insulin – the hormone responsible for distributing glucose to them. As a result, glucose is not distributed to the cells that use it to produce energy. Instead of glucose, they start burning fat, and in the process, volatile compounds called ketones are released, which are then excreted by the body through the lungs. This is what causes the breath to smell like acetone or nail polish remover.
