Lunch time comes every day, but is what you eat good or bad for your blood pressure?
One of the worst lunchtime foods is any sandwich that contains processed meat. Examples include sandwiches with sausage, bacon, or ham, which contain salt. Eating too much salt can raise blood pressure and increase the risk of heart and circulatory disease.
65 percent of refrigerated sliced meats, including ham, chicken, and salami, are saltier than Atlantic seawater. Reducing salt intake is the most cost-effective way to lower blood pressure.
Lowering blood pressure can reduce the number of people who suffer from strokes and heart disease. Moreover, the same can be said for the “life-changing disability” associated with these conditions.
Some types of bacon contain almost four times more salt than competing products, suggesting that lower-salt bacon is possible.
Adults should eat just over 6g of salt per day (2.4g of sodium).
Healthier lunch alternatives to lower blood pressure include:
- Squash and butternut squash soup
- Indian chicken salad
- Baked eggs with spinach.
